and Integrity
Should I be elected as Deputy what shall I do about our Economy?
Income growth
We all know that we have an increasing aging population
making it essential that that our economy is buoyant and
continues to grow. The average working age is 42 years and
this is steadily increasing. What can be done about this?
Immigration
I would propose a robust controlled immigration policy so that
we have more key workers to ensure our economy continues
to grow. A points based system similar to Australia could work
very well here in Jersey.
Brexit
Post Brexit we must remain close to the UK and work along
side their trade deals and forge new ones. We need to work on trade opportunities with non-European countries. I have practical
experience in presenting and preparing a case to the External Relations Department. I would be very confident representing our
island at an international level.
Tax
Running the economy of Jersey means that income has to exceed expenditure.
The finance industry is under threat due to tax legislation changes, Jersey needs to recognise where it will get its income for the
future.
I want to progress the tax review to ensure that those paying tax are paying an equitable amount. Not everyone is paying the same
amount of tax. We need a simpler tax system so that there is not tax by stealth i.e. water charges, health charges etc.
Locate Jersey
We need to look at the status of High Net Worth Individuals coming to the Island to ensure that they fairly contribute to the
economy and use local services.
Digital Jersey
I support a continued diversity of our economy with Digital Jersey; there are brilliant young entrepreneurs who are developing IT
systems and new social media platforms and digital solutions. I would like to see the infrastructure improved to encourage these
bright individuals who will create employment for the local economy.
I would like to see a new digital hub created to attract these creative entrepreneurs.
Should I be elected as Deputy what will I do about Health?
I have considerable medical experience with healthcare and
management, having worked in a medical practice in Dublin, a
hospital in Baghdad and co-owning my own Dental practice in
Scotland. I was self-employed in a Dental practice in Jersey for
many years.
Hospital
We need strong leadership to work with the consultants in
delivering our new hospital. Enough studies by consultants
have been made, now is time to make decisions and get on
with it. We must ensure co-ordination across the departments
and a concerted effort to deliver a workable plan for the new
hospital by the end of the year. I would facilitate getting the
Chief Minister, the Health Minister, the Planning Minister,
Architect and Consultants around the table to resolve the way forward.
Dentistry
Looking into the Dental health of our island, providing Dental Services at the local schools in a mobile dental unit providing Dental
check ups, Dental care and oral health education. Part funded by corporate sponsorship and the Government.
Organ Donation
Moving forward the proposition for opt out for organ donations rather than opt in.
Should I be elected as Deputy what do I want to do about the Honorary
Police?
As an elected Centenier for the parish of St Saviour I have had a unique insight into the
workings of the Honorary Police. I believe it is a great system and it has worked well for
many generations. That said times have changed, prosecutions have become more
frequent and have to be presented at the Magistrate court in a very professional way;
more training is needed for Centeniers.
Root and branch review of the Honorary Police
I am concerned about the future of the Honorary Police, which is why I would be
proposing a root and branch review of the system so that it can continue to flourish.
Future retention of officers
My concerns are that we are not getting the right people with commensurate experience
and skills coming forward to act as Centeniers. As present it is poorly supported, there is a
lack of expertise and professionalism.
Should I be elected as Deputy what do I want to do
about the environment?
Two pledges we can all make to transform our local environment
I would like to launch a campaign for the environment.
If like me you were shocked by the program on BBC Blue Planet and saw a bird feeding
plastic to its young, you would have been very moved.
Since that day I have made two pledges to make a big change and I am encouraging you
to do the same. Eventually I hope all cafes and restaurants in Jersey will follow. Let us in
St Saviour lead the way.
Plastic bottles
Firstly I will never when humanly possible buy a plastic bottle of water.
There is nothing wrong with the water from our taps, so pop it in a jug and cool it in the
fridge or reuse the plastic bottle you have already bought, they last forever. I also
propose the availability of more public water fountains.
Reusable coffee cups
I would propose working with café chains to reduce the price of a coffee by 25p if
customers bring their own coffee cups with them.
I would also like to encourage the coffee houses, bars and restaurants to use
biodegradable paper based cups and drinking straws.
Let’s together be a model for other parishes in Jersey to follow.
Should I be elected as Deputy what constituency work will I do?
My neighbours
As the only candidate who lives in the St Saviour number 3 district putting my neighbours
first is a priority.
Together we will work on any problems that you have. I will attend and participate in Parish
meetings, support our Honorary Police, attend the roads committee meetings and other
Parish business.
Agriculture
Our parish has a high level of Agriculture with many farms. Taking to the Farmers Union the
major threat to them currently is the lack of available farm workers. I am also proposing
that farmers can through recruitment companies apply for non-European temporary
workers to come and work on our farms. The individual farmers would be accountable for
the entrance and exit strategy of these workers. These will only be seasonal licences.
Without these essential workers our Jersey Royal brand and Jersey Dairy brand will suffer.
Traffic calming
There are places in the Parish that would benefit from traffic calming measures including La Grande Route de St Martin. There are
three roads, Poplar Avenue, Chestnut Avenue and Poplar Close which join La Grande Route De St Martin. I am proposing that this
zone is reduced to a 20 mph zone.
Housing
We need more affordable housing in our parish integrating all. I am proposing the St Saviour site for mixed housing, family homes
and apartments for the single people and elderly.
Should I be elected as Deputy what will I do about the Arts?
For far too long Culture and the Arts has been seen as a luxury and not important in Jersey.
When we talk about the value of arts and culture to society, we always start with its intrinsic
value: how arts and culture can illuminate our inner lives and enrich our emotional world.
However, we also understand that arts and culture has a wider, more measurable impact
on our economy, health and well-being, society and education & tourism
It’s important we also recognise this impact to help people think of our arts and culture for
what they are: a strategic island resource.
The value of arts and culture to people and society outlines the existing evidence on the
impact of arts and culture on our economy, health and well-being, society and education.
I am proposing that we have dedicated Arts and culture Minister not tagged on as an after
thought to another Ministry. This will ensure that the profile of the Arts and culture is
raised in the island and be able to address the issue of grossly inadequate funding within
the States.
If elected I intend to hold regular surgeries to discuss your concerns.
My first meetings are two informal meetings for you to get to know me and discuss your concerns before my policies are finalised.
If you are registered to vote for St Saviour number 3 you are invited to join me for coffee on:
•
Tuesday 5.30PM 13th March at JEMEC car showroom at Five Oaks.
•
Monday 11am 26th March at Le Quesnes Garden Centre.
I look forward to seeing you there.
