Policy - Good Housekeeping
Times have been hard. Since the banking crisis we have had to
face cuts and uncertainties. Our futures have not been as secure
as they once were.
We have all had to tighten our belts both at home and in
We have all enjoyed a 20% tax regime for many years now. I
propose to keep the Tax at this level for all earnings under
£125.000 per annum.
I don’t want to see cuts to services any further. The government
has to make savings and that is understood. However there
appears to be is a disconnect in the way the government is acting
and how we all think. There has to be prudent spending.
Improved systems have to be in place to stop waste in order that
spending does not go out of control.
In business when I want to advertise for staff, I have to
advertise locally, this is in our law, yet how many times to
we hear that the government use external consultants,
when there are very well qualified people on the island to do
the work. This doesn’t make sense. I am particularly
thinking of the consultants brought in to look at the
hospital, external architects, building surveyors etc.
This is not only insulting to our local work force, the money
spend on these consultations goes out of the island and usually
at a higher price. We need new best practice systems & service
level agreements and supporting our local economy.
I am going to mention the civil servants travel expenses. Yes, we
need to travel to get our islands message out there, we need
travel to attract inward investment, we need to travel to sell
ourselves as an offshore jurisdiction. What we don’t need is Rolls
Royce all singing all dancing flights. We book ahead, we know
how long we are going to be away for!!! We don’t need flexi
tickets, we don’t need first class, world traveller plus is more than
adequate on long haul flights and if an individual wants to
upgrade at their expense that’s fine. Spending controls need to
be looked at and new Key performance indicators set.
Zero hour contracts……I would like to see a review of these
contracts. They should not be used for someone working more
than 20 hours a week.
I am very concerned for workers who have been made
redundant will have to apply for their own jobs back with on a
zero hours contract. This in turn means, no holidays, less pay, no
benefits, no security.
Do we want our work force working like this?
